Peace Chapel Missionary Baptist Church History

Peace Chapel, the name chosen by charter member, Melba Reed, and adopted by all, began with 17 members in the home of the late Dea. C.L. and Sis. Oneita Jones, located at 807 E. 77th St. in Los Angeles, CA. The group, small in numbers but large in spirit, began holding regular worship services under the leadership of Min. Henry Gibson. In April of 1963, the first service was held in a small but quaint building located at 7622 S Avalon Boulevard. That building is now the room known to some as, “The Little Church,” and to others as, “The Fellowship Hall.”

As the membership grew strong in faith and fellowship, Peace Chapel also grew in ministry.

Ministries under Peace Chapel at the time were:
Adult choir                                            Youth choir
Usher Boards                                        Deacon and Deaconess boards
Missions board                                      Sunday School
Baptist Training Union (BTU).

In 1974, came the need and desire to build a larger church. With much prayer and God’s unfailing power Peace Chapel went under construction; and before long moved into the new building, where the Peace Chapel family continues to worship and praise God today.

In June of 1991 after 28 years of tireless service Pastor Gibson retired his tenure at Peace Chapel. He and Sis. Gibson relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada. On the retirement of Pastor Gibson, Pastor Robert A. Conard was called to shepherd the Peace Chapel flock. Through Pastor Conard’s humble submissiveness to God’s word and the will of the Holy Spirit, various ministries were implemented for the spiritual development of the church body, many of which continue today.

On April 3, 2002, Pastor Robert Conard was privileged to present a Certificate of License to Minister DeAntwan Fitts, as God had called him to minister in the faith.  We, the Peace Chapel Family, praise God for calling him to service.

In November of 2006, after 14 years of faithful service to Peace Chapel, Pastor Robert Conard retired from his tenure, and He and Sis. Conard relocated to Dallas, Texas. Under the leadership and guidance of Pastor Conard, Min. DeAntwan Fitts was ordained as Pastor and accepted the calling to shepherd the Peace Chapel Flock. Deacon James Smith, chairman of the Deacon Board, and his wife Sis. Lola Smith retired in April of 2007, and moved to Dallas Texas after many years of faithful service to the Peace Chapel family.

On the 20th day of April 2008 Peace Chapel celebrated 45 years on the corner of 76th Place and Avalon, as the church looks back on the very beginning, the events Peace Chapel has experienced to date, there is great anticipation for future service and worship as God and, the congregation maintains it’s commitment to keep the unity and harmony of the church, and to preserve the existence of the same, in the name of Jesus.

Peace Chapel will not forget the many members who were once a part of this body.  Thank God for all who have come and been part of the Peace Chapel Family over the many years of worshipping together.  Peace Chapel greatly appreciates the countless contributions rendered. We continue to pay tribute to our former and founding pastor and wife, Henry and Madge Gibson for their contribution to the organization, development and maintenance of the Peace Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

As Peace Chapel continues to experience growth in ministry, membership, and size, the congregation reflects and remembers the past, and looks forward to a future overflowing with opportunities to spread the good news of the birth, life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

To God be the Glory.
